The Konoha plate is a glazed ceramic in the lineage of Mashiko-ware. The design is based on Universal Design and holds a U.S registered design patent. It was created while sculptor Yoshimitsu Morito was assisting the Handicapped Ceramic Cooperative in Central America through the Japan International Cooperation Agency. Later, the design was revised based on a concept of Universal Design at the Ceramic Technology Center in Mashiko, Japan. It was designed for the handicapped but turned out to be useful for all. By using local materials, the philosophy of traditional Japanese ceramics is incorporated into the work.
